Translation and Vectors
This SMILE resource contains two packs of games, investigations, worksheets and practical activities supporting the teaching and learning of translations and vectors, from creating border patterns to working with vectors.
Translations and vectors pack one contains twelve work cards with a wide variety of activities covering border patterns, points of the compass, simple vectors, creating messages from vectors, translating coordinates, and the Queen on a chessboard problem.
Translations and vectors pack two contains eleven work cards with activities requiring students to translate shapes, combine translations, describe journeys using vectors, find the magnitude of a vector, use vector algebra, use vectors to show proof, add vectors, and divide vectors into a given ratio.
SMILE (Secondary Mathematics Individualised Learning Experiment) was initially developed as a series of practical activities for secondary school students by practising teachers in the 1970s. It became a complete individualised scheme based around a network of activity cards and assessments.
