As in the previous editions, students of the third edition of Nuffield Advanced Chemistry were required to undertake a four-week study of an applied aspect of science which was based on chemical principles.

The main purpose of this section of the course was to help students to see something of the scope of a related subject, and to appreciate its dependence upon chemical ideas. In doing this, they automatically revised some of the basic concepts of chemistry, such as structure and its relation to physical and chemical properties; equilibria; rates; and energy changes.

The special studies were also designed to show students something of the applications of the subjects, and of their social and economic effects. The hope was that students would come to regard chemistry as useful knowledge - useful in processing mineral resources, useful to dieticians, useful to manufacturers of metals and polymers, and useful in the production of the multitude of products that we find so valuable every day.

The surface chemistry special study was deleted. Metals as materials was rewritten to become a study of materials in general. The chemical engineering special study was retained as part of the course but it was not revised for the third edition.

The version produced for the second edition continued to be used.

Nuffield Advanced Chemistry (Third Edition): Biochemistry

The popular biochemistry special study was revised and updated for the third edition of Nuffield Advanced Chemistry. Biochemistry was first published as a special study in 1970, in a book of 166 pages with seven pages on DNA. Even in the second edition, published in...

Nuffield Advanced Chemistry (Third Edition): Food Science

The popular food science special study was revised and updated for the third edition of Nuffield Advanced Chemistry. The food science special study had been in existence since 1971, and was extensively revised in 1984. The changes in this edition continued to reflect...

Nuffield Advanced Chemistry (Third Edition): Materials Science

Since the publication of the first edition of Nuffield Advanced Chemistry in 1970, the importance of metals relative to other materials had diminished. This was been reflected in the development of the special study as the title had changed from ‘Metallurgy’, first to ‘Metals as materials’ and then, for the third...

Nuffield Advanced Chemistry (Third Edition): Mineral Process Chemistry

The Mineral Process Chemistry special study was originally published by the Mineral Industry Manpower and Careers Unit (MIMCU) in 1980 as a supplement to the studies published earlier by the Nuffield Foundation. In the first revision of the course, in 1984, this title was incorporated into the project’s list of...
