Nuffield Secondary Science: Theme 1 - The Interdependence of Living Things

This Nuffield Secondary Science theme suggests ways to help students arrive at an understanding of aspects of interdependence, and an appreciation of the importance of animal and plant conservation. The laboratory investigations develop from problems identified during field work.

Areas for investigation
The information in the theme book provides detailed practical advice and guidance related to a wide range of investigations. In this theme the broad areas include:
*field work in aquatic habitats, non-aquatic habitats and investigations of soil..
*explorations related to the cycling of water, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and the transfers of energy, between organisms in habitats
*investigations of growth in plants and in populations of organisms such as yeast
*studies of a number of garden pests and weeds and the methods that can be used to control them.

Fields of study
1.1 Environmental studies, classification and identification
1.2 Basic exchanges
1.3 Animal and plant growth: population studies
1.4 Colonization: disease, pest and weed control
