Methods of Assessment

Methods of Assessment was written in the early days of the GCSE qualification as a guide to teachers at a time when they were being expected to play a more active part in the formal assessment of science courses. The book was part of a series about assessment commissioned by the Nuffield-Chelsea Curriculum Trust.

The central issue explored in the first two chapters is this: "What is the image of science that examination questions and papers present?". In the view of the author, the image that emerged from the GCSE papers at the time was a sterile one which failed to capture the spirit of science or the aims of GCSE courses.

The book provides a concise introduction to the principles and purposes of assessment. It covers a range of question types with a discussion of their strengths and weaknesses.
