Nuffield Advanced Biology: Projects in Biological Science

Published by Nuffield Foundation, this Nuffield Advanced Biology book was intended for teachers. It described how students could carry out open-ended individual projects as was required as a part of the A-level course. The project team defined a project as a practical investigation carried out by an individual student involving enquiry into some aspect of biology, conducted largely on his or her own initiative.

Although a project was expected to be an investigation involving practical work in the field and/or laboratory, it did not need to be specifically experimental in the sense of setting up a new artificial situation to solve a problem. A project could involve a taxonomic study so long as it did not just involve the production of a list of species in a given area. A comparative study of structure or function was considered suitable as long as it was more rigorous than just a dissection accompanied by a description. Investigations involving careful observation, description, and analyses, even though they do not involve an experiment, were accepted as suitable projects.
