Revised Nuffield Advanced Chemistry: Metals as Materials

This was one of the six Special Studies to feature in the Revised Nuffield Advanced Chemistry course. Each student was expected to work through one of the studies in about four weeks. The aim was to show students how chemistry is applied in agriculture, industry, and medicine, and to help them to appreciate that the social and economic aspects of science must be considered.

Purposes of the Special Study
1. To extend and apply the study of structure and bonding in the basic course.
2. To show how an analysis of function linked to a knowledge of the properties of materials can lead to a successful solution to the design of a particular component.
3. To provide opportunities for problem solving and open-ended investigations in an important field of applied science.
