Steps to Success in Mathematics: Securing Progress for All Children

This set of mathematics resources, from National Strategies, aims to help teachers plan and provide teaching and learning that will ensure children progress through the National Curriculum levels over Key Stages One and Two.

These include the Overcoming the barriers, Securing levels, Assessment and Supporting materials.

  • Overcoming the Barriers: These materials provide guidance on aspects of mathematics that children find difficult to learn and which block their progress.
  • Securing Levels: These materials are intended to give support to teachers to ensure that as many children as possible make the progress necessary to reach set levels. The guidance identifies key areas of learning that children need to secure to attain the level in mathematics. Whilst teachers are able to integrate the ideas from these materials into ongoing planning, they could also use them to plan targeted support for particular groups of children. There is a double-page spread for each of the six areas of mathematics.
  • Assessment: These materials help teachers to assess what learning has taken place, plan next steps and identify children who need extra support.
  • Supporting materials: These materials aid planning for yearly and level expectations by showing typical child's characteristics and illustrating standards through test questions linked to the primary framework objectives.
