Statistics in Your World - Level 3

This resource from the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSSCSE) consists of the level 3 units. For each unit below there are comprehensive teacher's notes giving an overview of the unit, the aims and objectives for that unit, prior learning or prerequisites and the equipment required.

  • Car Careers: Students conduct a survey to investigate the ages of cars. They are encouraged to discover why the sample may be biased and are led to investigate official published figures. On completion of this unit students should be able to conduct a simple survey and represent the results in a bar chart.
  • Phony Figures: Students are introduced to various abuses of statistics, including errors in representation and presentation, and errors of omission. On completing this unit students should be able to criticise constructively any of the more common misuses of data in advertising or argument.
  • Net Catch: This unit introduces the capture-recapture method of estimating population sizes and uses this to look at some of the problems of estimating. On completion of this unit students should be able to estimate populations using the capture-recapture method which is used in biology. They should be more aware of the effect of sample size and various practical problems on the accuracy of estimates.
  • Cutting It Fine: This unit deals primarily with quality control, but the notion of variability is central throughout. The unit concentrates on one particular aspect of the quality control process - that concerned with whether a stated minimum content is exceeded. On completion of this unit, students should be able to construct quality control charts and interpret them in a simple way.
  • Multiplying People: Starting with population data from 1650 to the present day, projections are made for the future, and some of the implications discussed. On completion of this unit students should be able to draw, read and interpret population pyramids and make simple projections from graphs and tables.
  • Pupil Poll: This unit explains the basic techniques involved in opinion polls. It is centred around a practical poll to find out students' favourite records, and the wider implications are stressed throughout. Both random and stratified sampling are introduced. Students will learn how to conduct an opinion poll and identify possible pitfalls.
