Skill 2.9 Observation to Support Practical Work

Produced by Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme, the aim of this activity is to help students carry out practical procedures efficiently and accurately without simply ‘following the recipe’.

In the activity, students watch a brief video clip and analyse its usefulness in demonstrating a practical procedure. This helps students to have more focussed observation when looking at a practical demonstration.

Plastic from Potatoes
The video shows the extraction of starch from a potato and then its reaction to produce a polymer which can be baked hard in an oven.
