Motivating A-Level Mathematics

Produced by the Spode Group, this resource illustrates many applications of topics in A-level mathematics. The book is divided into four chapters. Each chapter contains a number of case studies. Each case study is divided into an introductory problem statement, solution and further exercises.

Functions contains case studies covering: circular functions, polynomial functions, exponential laws, logarithmic laws, binomial theorem, arithmetic series and trigonometrical formulae.

Calculus contains case studies covering: finding maximum and minimum values using differentiation in a variety of situations and using differential equations to solve problems.

Mechanics contains case studies covering: numerical methods, differential equations, vectors, projectiles, motion with constant acceleration, impulse, momentum, motion with constant acceleration, Newton's Second Law and centres of mass.

Probability and Statistics contains case studies covering: binomial distribution, normal approximation to binomial, normal distribution and probability. Alternative methods of using the case studies are suggested in the introduction to the book. The book concludes with solutions to the exercises.
