Developing Writing in Science

The materials in this resource are from the Secondary National Strategy ‘Progressing to Level 6 and beyond in science’ project. They were intended for science teachers who are focusing on developing writing in science – specifically explanations, arguments and descriptions.

These materials consist of general guidance on developing writing, and then for each of the areas of explanatory, argument and descriptive writing there is the teacher guidance file which provides strategies for teachers using appropriate resources and should be read first - in conjunction with each steps table document. Both documents provide a breakdown of each key skill, with suggested strategies for moving students from one level, or ‘step’, to the next.

For each of the steps in the explanatory, argument and descriptive writing steps tables, the form of writing is exemplified in the Steps table - exemplification files. For more general writing skills teachers can view the Scientific writing strand of the Level 6+ project.
