Exploring the Risks
This is a worksheet activity to help students to understand how Huntington’s disease (HD) is inherited and to appreciate why some people choose to use pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to avoid passing the condition on.
The comprehension exercise covers dominant and recessive alleles, family trees and the probability of inheriting this disease. Students can then work in groups to discuss why they think PGD may be considered controversial, and in what instances they think it may be used.
This activity can be introduced by using the video Luke’s Story which shows a teenager who may have inherited the disease from his mother.
