What is CF?

This is a simple comprehension activity for students to consider the main features of cystic fibrosis (CF), the recessive pattern of inheritance, carriers and screening. The student worksheets provide a clear diagram of the function of the CFTR protein, which forms a channel in the cell membrane to allow salt to move in and out of some cells. Mutations in the CFTR gene can affect the production of this protein which leads to the symptoms of CF. The film Ryan’s Story can be used to introduce this activity.

This resource was produced by Genetic Disorders UK, which provides schools with a host of free resources for increasing awareness and understanding of genetic disorders.
