Aspects of Primary Education: the Teaching and Learning of Science

Published in 1989 by Her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI), this report looks at the changes in science teaching from the mid-seventies to the late-eighties and discusses how further improvements could be achieved. It is based on observations made by HMI during the inspection of 300 primary schools in England, and from evidence about science gathered during shorter visits to 80 primary schools since 1987. The report discusses the considerable progress made in science teaching between the mid-1970s and the mid-1980s and the evidence of further improvements made since 1986. It suggests ways in which schools can continue to improve science teaching and learning focussing on breadth and balance of the work, in terms of the knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to ability. It also gives examples of good practice in schools.
