Big changes by little things

Dr Tim Gabriel’s job involves making materials for batteries and solar cells which have tiny structures and shapes, allowing them to work more efficiently. He describes how his combined degree in chemistry and languages allowed him to spend a year in France. Tim also explains how his research career helped him to develop more general abilities such as time and project management, effective communication and advanced team-working skills. Through developing his presenting skills, he was nominated to represent his department at a research competition held at the House of Commons. A few years later, he was promoting his scientific research to the general public on TV, radio and stage and his contribution to communicating science was formally recognised with a meeting with former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
