Calculus: Graphing the First and Second Differentials

This excel program contains two interactive spreadsheets designed to explore the gradient functions of cubic and quadratic functions.

The first activity enables students to alter the coefficients in the function ax2+bx+c. The graph of the function and the graphs of the first and second differentials are shown on one diagram. The coordinates of many points on each graph are listed beside the coefficients of the derived functions. This enables the student to explore the relationship between the coefficients of the three related functions.

The second activity enables students to alter the coefficients in the function ax3+bx2+cx+d and to see the graphs, the function and the first and second differentials on one diagram. As with the quadratic function the coordinates of points on each graph are listed so the student can explore the relationship between the coefficients of the three related functions.

The workbook contains a further eight worksheets providing further questions for use in the classroom.
