Cystic Fibrosis as a Teaching Context at Key Stage 4

Produced in 2015, these resources use Cystic Fibrosis as a context to provide an opportunity to develop students understanding of a number of key concepts in biology in a connected and real way. Scientific advances in the treatment and diagnosis of CF are fast moving, and this provides the opportunity to deepen understanding of how science works, including controversies and ethical issues that arise with rapid scientific development.

Students explore how pathogens cause disease, ways in which the body defends itself against disease, natural and acquired immunity, the process of drug development, the structure and function of protein molecules, chromosomes, DNA and inheritance.

The unit contains information for teachers summarising current research and scientific advances. There are related teaching ideas and activities, which can be lifted and used directly with classes, or alternatively can be tailored and adapted and used flexibly. All class materials are curriculum linked and designed to be taught as an integral part of the biology specification.

These resources were Supported and funded by National STEM Learning Centre and Network and Research Councils UK (RCUK)
