Nuffield Pathways Through Science: Physics Modules

The Nuffield Pathways Through Science course was developed to align with the very innovative and successful modular science course created by the Northern Examining and Assessment Board (NEAB now merged into AQA). There were five physics modules:

  • Energy Resources – exploring the issues arising from the large scale use of energy resources
  • Forces – covering forces and motion including circular motion, changes in momentum, kinetic and potential energy, machines and gravity.
  • Electricity – covering current electricity, electromagnetism and its applications, transformers and the mains electricity supply, the uses of electrolysis as well as electrostatics
  • Radiation – covering the properties of electromagnetic radiation, the radiations from radioactive materials, image formation by lenses and mirrors as well as the wave model for light.
  • Control and Communication – covering sound waves, sound recording, how the ear works, the properties of ultrasound and the uses of electronic system.

Energy Resources

This Nuffield Pathways Through Science module provides a programme of activities designed to help students to appreciate that current ways of supplying the energy needs of society are not sustainable. The module is presented in six episodes:
En 1: What are the...

Forces

This Nuffield Pathways Through Science module explored forces and motion to include collisions and explosions explained in terms of momentum. In the section about space the treatment covered circular motion as well as kinetic and potential energy. Activities in the...

Electricity

This Nuffield Pathways Through Science module covered current electricity, electromagnetism and its applications, transformers and the mains electricity supply, the uses of electrolysis as well as electrostatics. The module was presented in four episodes:
El 1:...

Radiation

This Nuffield Pathways Through Science module introduced a source detector model for thinking about radiations. This model was used as students explored the transmission, absorption and reflection of radiation and then went on to learn about the radiations from...
