This set of resources, Study Plus, from the National Strategies is an intervention programme for Key Stage Four students that was designed to raise standards at GCSE, principally in English and mathematics, but also in other GCSE subjects by improving literacy, numeracy and learning in general.

As an approach, Study Plus was intended to help schools to move towards more personalised learning for students and is entirely consistent with the recommendations of the report of the Teaching and Learning in 2020 Review Group (2020 Vision, DfES, January 2007).

Study Plus in mathematics was designed to give teachers and students the opportunity to explore an idea or a topic in great detail, with few time constraints. The topics that appeared to work most successfully in the pilot span a range of curriculum areas and a range of mathematical objectives. Working within topics allowed students to make connections and develop skills that are transferable.

The resource consists of a handbook containing general guidance and ten sample Study Plus units which cover:
*Place value, ordering and rounding, integers, powers and roots;
*Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion;
*Calculations – mental methods and written methods;
*Equations, formulae and identities;
*Sequences, functions and graphs;
*Shape and space, measures, handling data, probability, and using and applying mathematics through a variety of contexts and activities.

Boxes

This Study Plus unit from the National Strategies develops an understanding of volume and surface area of 3D objects through exploring nets.

There are opportunities for practical work in all of the lessons. The unit looks at perimeter, area and volume in context. In addition, there are opportunities to...

Drop Dead Gorgeous

This Study Plus unit from the National Strategies engages students in discussion about attractiveness, using photographs of the faces of famous people. The aim of this unit is for students to explore the golden ratio as a determinant of attractiveness. In particular the link to facial beauty is explored using the...

Line Painting

In this Study Plus unit from the National Strategies, students are given opportunities to explore line painting through a practical approach, enabling them to appreciate the need to use algebraic reasoning in a visual setting.

The main themes are using and applying mathematics, constructing functions arising...

MP3 Players

In this Study Plus unit from the National Strategies students investigate buying and using an MP3 player. They consider best buys and compare different MP3 players, using proportional reasoning.

The unit looks at scatter graphs, ratio and proportion, percentage changes, and simple functions arising from...
