Nuffield Maths Teaching Project – Applications/Miscellaneous

This collection is from the Nuffield Foundation and consists of four modules: Speed and gradient, Simultaneous equations, Functionality and matrices.

Each module consists of activities for students, 'hints for pupils' for some of the cards and teachers' notes which contain suggestions for teaching approaches, answers and all of the student material.

The teachers' notes usually show the structure of the student cards which in most modules are grouped into sets of cards. This was designed to support planning for students with differing prior knowledge and allowing for a range of attainment in the class.

Speed and Gradient

This module from the Nuffield Foundation gives an attempt to relate the gradient of a graph to the rate of displacement of an object which moves with time. This can be summed up in the phrase 'faster is steeper'. The module is in three sections, each of which is based...

Functionality

From the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of this module is to introduce students to the linked concepts of 'variable' and 'function', so that by recognising the independent variables in an experimental situation, they will be able to control the experiment in an...

Matrices

From the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of this module is to introduce the language associated with matrices, to illustrate their use and begin to develop the algebra associated with them.

The resource consists of...
