Geology: Structure of the Earth

Geology: Structure of the Earth was a topic designed by the Northumberland Supported Self Study Unit at Northumberland County Council in the early 1990s for post-16 students. Comprising six units, the topic aimed to not only teach about geological features of the Earth but also to develop learning skills which would be transferable to other subjects. Units 2 to 6 start with a chart showing the time to be sent on writing and drawing, reading, researching, doing experiments or simulations, and solving geological problems.

Each of the units contains sections:
*Getting organised
*The activities
*Preparing for your tutorial
*Figures and sheets, with a glossary booklet

A Topic Map was provided and designed to be consulted at the start of each unit as it shows how the units are interlinked and the skills and knowledge to developed in each one.

Structure of the Earth was designed to be the first in a series of topics for the study of earth science aimed at developing knowledge of the world and eventually to inform 'environmental debate' and choices regarding the balance of the Earth's processes and its finite resources.

Unit 1: Surface Features

In this first unit from the Geology: Structure of the Earth series, produced by Northumberland County Council, students investigate the main structural features of the Earth such as ocean basins and continents. The unit aims to help students develop their discussion, listening, speaking, explaining and...

Unit 2: A First Look Inside

In this unit from the Geology: Structure of the Earth series, produced by Northumberland County Council, students discover more about the Earth's internal structure. In a series of tasks, students investigate the true shape of the Earth, gravity and how geologists use it, movements of the Earth and what happens...

Unit 3: Earthquakes

The third unit of the Geology: Structure of the Earth series, produced by Northumberland County Council, follows on from the previous units and looks at the how, why and where of earthquakes, how they affect the Earth's surface, people and buildings, and how they are predicted. As in previous units, Unit 3 contains...

Unit 4: Into the Earth

Unit 4 of the Geology: Structure of the Earth series, produced by Northumberland County Council, leads on from the third unit, which looked at the effects of earthquakes on the surface of the Earth, to now discover the effects inside the Earth. Students find out about how...
