The Current and Future UK Science Workforce

This report, written for the Science Council and published in September 2011, explores the potential for an increase in registrations to the Chartered Scientist register (CSci) which recognises high levels of professionalism and competence in science. The aim is to expand registration to technician and intermediate levels, rather than just those practising at chartered level by developing comprehensive data on the current UK science workforce, understanding the profile of employment across the skills levels and providing a view on the future workforce and where demand is likely to be the highest. The report looks at the current UK science workforce, its characteristics and qualifications profile. It then looks to the future, aiming to to raise the professional standing of those working in science and its applications at all levels. It is hoped that registration to the CSci would ensure that opportunities for further training, professional development and progression for workers in science would exist.
