Cosmetics Specialist Scientific Adviser

Shalkila is a scientific adviser for L'Oreal. Her role is to help market new fashion cosmetics and perfumes. This Department for Education clip can be used to illustrate science-based careers and also as an example of applied science.

Shalkila's role is to explain how cosmetic products work. These are a mixture of chemical compounds and so it is really important for her to have a good understanding of chemistry as well as biology. That enables Shalkila to understand the science behind the products and explain it in a simple way. She says, "Some people are surprised when they find out I'm a scientist, because I get to work with beauty products all day. The cosmetics and beauty industry is quite glamorous and sometimes there are big celebrity product launches to attend."
