Medical Physics in the Electromagnetic Spectrum

This resource, produced by the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), contains a presentation and teachers' notes with worksheets. It illustrates the uses of different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The materials show the use of:

* radio waves for mobile phones

* infra red for pulse oximetry, measuring blood flow and thermal imaging

* visible light for endoscopy, a scanning laser opthalmoscope, photodynamic therapy and in treating jaundice

* X-rays in imaging, CT-scans and radiotherapy
