Tunnel Design Engineer: Kate Woolley

This STEMNET resource describes the background and career of tunnel design engineer and STEM Ambassador Kate Woolley.

Kate designs and supervises the construction of tunnels and finds that she needs to use maths, physics and technology to make everyday decisions. Engineering, however, had not always seemed a natural choice. Kate found maths difficult until some great teachers helped her to see the subject in an understandable way. She also volunteered to do the Engineering Enterprise Scheme (EES).

“As a civil engineer, I get to work on projects for the good of the public that are being or will be used by millions of people worldwide. I’m very proud of that.”
