Developing Active Learning Approaches in Numeracy

Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, these materials help to demonstrate effective practice. This case study, written by Options 2, looks at the themes of embedding of functional skills and the wider sector.

Options 2 provides training for young people to enable them to achieve the skills and qualifications they need to secure a job. This case study investigates how the effectiveness of active learning in maths, to motivate and encourage learners, compares to more traditional teaching methods. This was done by dividing a group of learners into two, teaching one group using hands-on, active learning strategies and resources and the other using traditional teacher-led methods.
