Increase Uptake of STEM Careers

Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, these materials help to demonstrate effective practice. By Dereham Sixth Form College, this case study looks at the themes of knowledge and transfer technology and progression in STEM. This project aimed to look at a way of encouraging continuation of STEM subjects and explore how to develop learners' skills by using a STEM leadership award. As part of the award students participated in work placements, research, team work and recording video podcasts of their experience. The project aims were to: • Encourage more women to take up STEM subjects in HE and in industry placements. • Allow students to become more confident and experience management skills. • Encourage knowledge technology transfer (KTT), for students to show improvement in skills such as maths, numeracy and communications • Support students develop a portfolio of skills. • Develop ongoing CPD with other establishments.
