Supporting Transition in Chemistry

Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, these materials help to demonstrate effective practice. By Paston College, this case study looks at the theme of progression through STEM.

Students find the transition from GCSE to AS level chemistry difficult. This is not helped by their different experiences at GCSE and the different GCSE specifications studied. Initial studies suggest that students who are likely to fail can be identified early using standard tests, with tracking of results from one year to the next.

Additional support sessions including different activities for these students allow them to improve to a standard where they are predicted to pass AS chemistry.
