Triple Science Case Study: Steering Students Towards Triple Science

From triple science support, this case study illustrates how a school changed the options system to make triple science a more desirable choice, offered guidance to learners to encourage them to choose triple science, and improved the quality of teaching so students would want to study more science at Key Stage Four.

The case study includes some background information about Codsall Community High School (Staffordshire) and how the school:
• restricted the choice students can make to being within the sciences, rather than across subjects,
• provided guidance on Key Stage Four courses during Key Stage Three, and
• focused on quality in the classroom.

It also considers the effect all this has had on uptake of triple science GCSEs.

Key learning points for others are identified and include offering triple science to all students and guiding and encouraging all learners at Level Six and above to take it, and aiming to improve the quality of teaching and learning so students want to do more science.
