Subject Professional Development Materials: Design and Technology

This resource from Ofsted is aimed at subject leaders to help improve teaching and learning by reflecting on the main messages from the design and technology report, Meeting Technological Challenges? The resource draws upon evidence from design and technology subject survey visits by Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) to a range of secondary schools between 2007 and 2010. The presentation looks at the key issues considered in the report and poses questions for discussion within the department together with some of the commentary from the report. The questions covered are:
• How challenging is design and technology in your school?
• How can you ensure the most effective teaching in design and technology?
• How can you ensure the best learning in design and technology?
• What don’t you teach in D&T and why don’t you teach it?
• How effectively do you meet the subject-specific design and technology training needs of the teachers in your school?
