Fabric Fires
The Fabric Fires activity for Key Stage Three students looks at how different fabrics catch fire and burn. Students are asked to first consider the commonest reasons for fires in the home. They then test and compare a fabric and a cotton wool ball, firstly when untreated and then having first soaked them in a fire retardant solution.
The activity links with the chemistry programme of study: scientific thinking, applications and implications of science, practical and enquiry skills, critical understanding of evidence, communication, chemical and material behaviour.
The activity is accompanied by notes for teachers.
Although this resource was created in 2010 as part of the Future Morph project run by the Science Council and the resources date from this time, it is still relevant and useful today.
