Medical Compression

In this activity, students investigate the uses of materials and fabrics in medical applications, such as pressure bandages for burns injuries and anti-embolism stockings for deep vein thrombosis. The students make their own pressure sensor using different types of fabric. They then calibrate their sensor and create a calibration curve, so that they can use the sensor to take pressure measurements. The activity can be extended by using the calibrated sensor to investigate the pressure exerted by different types of clothing and dressings, such as compression socks.

The activity links with the physics programme of study: scientific thinking, applications and implications of science, practical and enquiry skills, critical understanding of evidence, communication, energy, electricity and forces.

The activity is accompanied by notes for teachers.

Although this resource was created in 2010 as part of the Future Morph project run by the Science Council and the resources date from this time, it is still relevant and useful today.
