Using Graphs

This SMILE resource contains two packs of games, investigations, worksheets and practical activities supporting the teaching and learning of how students use graphs mathematically, from reading information from a graph to using graphs to show distance, velocity and acceleration.

Using graphs pack one contains seven work cards with a wide variety of activities covering reading information from graphs, using conversion graphs, and a variety of distance/time graphs.

Using graphs pack two contains nine work cards with activities requiring students to use distance/time graphs, mathematically model with graphs, interpret different shapes of graphs, solve linear programming problems by shading regions on graphs to represent inequalities, find the area under a graph and understand what that represents, and explore velocity/time graphs.

SMILE (Secondary Mathematics Individualised Learning Experiment) was initially developed as a series of practical activities for secondary school students by practising teachers in the 1970s. It became a complete individualised scheme based around a network of activity cards and assessments.

Related resources include answers to all of the cards and test books and answers.
