A Level Biology, Higher Education and Research in the Biological Sciences

This report describes the findings of research carried out for the Wellcome Trust by the Centre for Education and Industry at the University of Warwick in 2002-2003.

The Wellcome Trust was seeking to establish how well existing A Level Biology courses meet the needs of modern biological sciences, the aims of schools and FE colleges, the aspirations and concerns of young people, and the requirements of Higher Education.

The specific objectives of the research were to:

• Inform teachers and curriculum designers about important research topics in the biological sciences that may be neglected at A Level.

• Identify the skills and knowledge deemed essential at Post 16 level to ensure progression to contemporary undergraduate and postgraduate life sciences.

• Indicate the components of existing courses that enthuse and excite young people, notably those who study the subject for intrinsic interest rather than career aspiration.
