Solar Images and Data

This resource contains three activities and accompanying teachers’ notes.

Picking out the details
Using images from the Hinode satellite and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, this activity requires students to use scale and unit conversions to learn more about the size and surface of the Sun.

Handling faint and bright images
Students learn about noise and image processing, and plot a graph to estimate the peak intensity of a solar flare.

Handling data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory
Using the context of the SDO, students are asked questions on data rates and must make conversions between bits and bytes and use correct prefixes.

Curriculum links include: communications, electromagnetic spectrum, magnetism and electromagnetism, data analysis, interpretation of images, measurements, resolution, choice of instruments and methods, impact of developments in science and technology
