Textiles: Industrial Finishing Processes

This film clip describes the use of the textiles finishing process, calendaring. This is a vital process in making materials for use in parachutes, which must allow the right amount of air through. By closing the pores in the fabric, calendaring restricts the airflow through it so that the parachutist does not hit the ground too fast. Too much calendaring would cause the parachute to split at the seams. The film explores the role of Chris Ware, Finishing Supervisor, who ensures that each meter of fabric is calendared to the right specification.
