Braille
This activity covers the compact method of coding used by Braille. It explores calculating the number of different patterns that exist using a 3 x 2 design.
Braille design: Overview outlines the content of the resource and suggests possible approaches and extensions.
Braille design: Guidance briefly outlines the nature of the problem which Braille solved and suggests how important it is as an example of coding. It provides some important notes about the data sheet. There are also links to some CIMT resources including one which shows the nature of the power series.
Braille design: Data Sheet shows the Braille characters for letters, numbers and punctuation.
Braille design: Handout provides a brief history of the Braille system and poses three questions. How many patterns do you need to code letters, capital letters, digits, punctuation etc? How can the Braille design meet these requirements? Can you design a better method for visually impaired people to be able to read?
