Tideway: STEM activities (key stage three)

Tunnelworks is a series of teaching and learning resources linking mathematics and science to the Thames Tideway Tunnel project, a major new sewer that will help protect the River Thames from increasing pollution. Background to the project is given in the introductory video.     

This set of four STEM resources can be used in the classroom as a suggested one hour lesson or as a shorter homework task using the postcards. Each activity consists of a practical involving one aspect of the Thames Tideway Tunnel with an accompanying worksheet and teacher notes. 

  • Lesson 1: Rock Investigations. Properties of different rocks are examined. 
  • Lesson 2: Chalk and Cheese Pizza. Modelling the ground structure beneath London via pizza manufacture. 
  • Lesson 3: Thames Twitchers. Investigating the effects of pollution upon the bird community. 
  • Lesson 4: Concrete Jungle. Uses and properties of concrete used in the building of the tunnel.
