Extension Modules for GCSE Biology

The Salters' GCSE Biology course (1993 – 2007) was based on the biology content from the double award science course, with the addition of four new modules to provide coverage of the extra content.

Growing Crops: This module contains materials for nine lessons. It deals with the breeding, cultivation and harvesting of plants as crops. Soil structure and nutrient content are also studied. Plant reproduction and techniques for selective breeding are considered and agriculture is viewed from a whole-world economic perspective.

Industrious Microbes: This module reviews the history of biotechnology then moves forward to consider the use of large-scale bio-fermenters and commercial uses of enzymes. Finally, aspects of genetic engineering are reviewed.

The Ploughman’s Lunch: This module involves lots of practical activities with microbes. Typical patterns of establishment and growth of microbial populations are studied. Yeast is studied both in production of alcoholic drinks and as a raising agent in baking. Uses of bacteria in the dairy industry to produce cheese or yoghurt are illustrated.

Off the Blocks: A variety of sporting contexts are used to consider the structure and function of various systems within the body. Students consider how exercise, diet and life-style can contribute to fitness and good health.

Growing Crops

This Salters’ Science extension module for biology deals with the breeding, cultivation and harvesting of plants as crops. Experiments on soil structure and nutrient content are matched with data about major crops to show why different crops require different conditions...

Industrious Microbes

This biology extension module from the Salters’ Science course reviews the history of biotechnology to introduce the use of microbes in large-scale industrial biochemistry. Student ideas about positive uses of microbes are reviewed. Students monitor the growth of single...

Off the Blocks

In this Salters’ Science biology extension module, sporting contexts are used as a basis for study of various systems within the body. The module also considers how diet, exercise and life-style can contribute towards fitness and good health.

The Ploughman's Lunch

In this biology extension module of the Salters’ Science course, an exhibition of foods is used to introduce examples of using microbes in food processing. Students make sauerkraut and learn about the establishment of microbial populations in new habitats. Positive uses...
