A Constructivist View of Learning and Teaching in Science

The aim of the Children’s Learning in Science Project (CLIS) was to discover how to use a constructivist approach to teach selected topics, and translate this into materials which could be used by teachers.

These are the key principles of the approach:

*What is already in the learners mind matters
*Individuals construct their own meanings
*The construction of meaning is a continuous and active process
*Learning may involve conceptual change
*The construction of meaning does not always lead to belief
*Learners have final responsibility for their learning
*Some constructed meanings are shared
