The Gas State

These downloadable videos and animations are part of the multimedia package Stuff and Substance, developed by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). They can be used to predict the possibility of the gas state with the particle model and understand that ‘gases’ are substances which happen to have boiling points below room temperature.

The gas state is a mystery to most students. Many do not think of ‘gases’ as being substances in the same way as those appearing in the solid or liquid states at room temperature. Common misconceptions for boiling water are that the big bubbles are air or hydrogen and/or oxygen and that the mist above is water in the gas state. The particle animations can be used to predict the possibility of the gas state and a video shows a drop of water turning to a clear body of gas. The ideas can then be applied to boiling water. The idea of substances having a boiling point is established and that some substances have boiling points below room temperature. Videos of putting a lighted splint to methane, nitrogen and oxygen show very different behaviours of what look to be the same.
