Supporting ESOL learners in numeracy/maths qualifications

Produced in 2011 by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, these materials help to demonstrate effective practice. From Leicester College this case study looks at the theme of equality and diversity. For many ESOL learners (speakers of other languages), achievement in mathematics and numeracy is impeded by difficulties in understanding the language of the subject.

This case study describes the production of a glossary of numerical and mathematical words and terms to help improve success for these learners. The aim was to improve achievement by helping learners understand and become familiar with mathematical terminology. The glossary, developed by a team of six ESOL tutors, includes definitions of key words, examples and symbols, together with space for learners to add new words and terms.

This work was also supported by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).
