Group Work in Design and Technology 2

This Teachers TV video shows the four teachers featured in Group Work 1 as they evaluate the impact of the group work techniques they used in their lessons. Key Stage Three Strategy Consultant Gareth Stevens, from Harrow Local Education Authority, shares his observations and explains the relevance of group work in a wider variety of lessons. The teachers agree on the usefulness of the exercise and express surprise at how willing their students are to work in groups. Some interesting challenges are debated, including the role of the teacher, when to intervene and when to leave students alone and how best to organise the groups.

A common observation is that group work suits particular students well, especially those who are often not engaged in more traditional activities. The four teachers reflect on the interplay between more and less able students and how their expectations were sometimes dramatically challenged.
