KS2 Science: Ready to Learn

This programme from Teachers TV shows part of a lesson designed to encourage students to consider the ways in which they learn and help them to take ownership of their own learning. It also raises their awareness of the factors that can affect this. At the Hills Lower School in Bedfordshire, teacher Carol Humphries discusses with her Year Four class what it means to be ready to learn. The children then sort ideas about being ready to learn into true, false or not sure. This provokes a discussion within groups and the class about their ideas. The children are able to reflect on ways in which they learn and how to be better learners. After a vigorous session of brain gym, the children explore the various factors that affect their mental state. At the end of the lesson, the children come up with their own top tips on how to make themselves more ready to learn. The ideas and methods may be used for other lessons where children think through questions or problems in small groups.
