Royal Liver Clock

In this Bowland assessment task, students are shown a picture of one of the clock faces from the Royal Liver building that was once used as a table. Students are asked to estimate how many people could sit around this table. The diameter of the clock is given in feet so that the circumference can be calculated. Students are also asked the same question given the diameter of the clock face of Big Ben. The diameter this time is given in metres. Students are required to explain the problem, use logical reasoning and make accurate calculations, consider the appropriateness of their answer in context of the problem and present their arguments clearly. Teacher guidance includes concepts which may be discussed with students, examples of probing questions which may be useful and assumptions that students need to make when completing the task. The assessment guidance consists of a progression table detailing how students may improve in each of the key processes. The resource concludes with a number of examples of students' work, together with comments, probing questions and feedback.
