Computing in the National Curriculum: a Guide for Primary Teachers

This document, produced by Computing at School, is to support the teaching and learning of computing in primary school. The introduction explains the context of the document with computing being included in the 2014 national curriculum in England.

Getting started provides an overview what is expected at Key Stage One and Key Stage Two split into strands of computer science, information technology and digital literacy

Subject knowledge gives a more detailed explanation of what is meant by each of the learning objectives and defining terms used in the objectives. Throughout the guide computing terms are highlighted by the use of orange text.

Planning asks the question: “How can we turn the requirements of the programme of study into engaging lessons?” and provides help and suggestions for teachers in sections entitled Starting with the programme of study, Starting with projects, Using a pre-written scheme of work and Using a pupil-centred approach.

The next section, Resourcing provides suggestions and guidance for resourcing the curriculum and Teaching considers pedagogy, Technologically enhanced learning , Inclusion, Gifted and talented pupils and Informal learning.

Assessment provides help and advice on formative assessment and summative assessment.

The document concludes with a glossary, a guide to where to find resources and details of where further support can be found.
