Science Behind the Materials

The Science Behind the Materials activities are part of a collection of materials from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The activities enable students to:

• understand that models can be used to explain macroscopic properties of matter
• understand that smart materials react to their environment
• experience the behaviour of a non-Newtonian fluid

In this unit, students develop their understanding of the properties of the three states of matter. They have the opportunity to experiment with a range of different substances that do not fit neatly into the traditional states of matter model with a focus on students exploring the properties of smart materials to develop an understanding of why they behave the way they do.

The materials consist of teacher notes, an odd-one-out starter, a role play practical activity and supporting worksheets. Curriculum links include solids, liquids, gases, particles, particulate nature, models.

The activity is part of a full set of resources called D30 and is supported by the the video Amazing D30.
