Scratch Maths Quiz Variables

This Barefoot Computing resource builds on the ‘Maths quiz with selection’ learning activities which should be undertaken first.

It involves improving an existing Scratch maths quiz and adding score-keeping using variables – a quiz Scratch file is provided for students who do not have access to one they made themselves.

The concept of variables is covered in-depth before they are introduced to using variables in Scratch – the children may benefit from using the ‘variables unplugged’ activity before attempting this one. They are asked to consider a scoring algorithm before adding it to the program, and are free to develop their own scoring system. They also learn about initialising programs through experience.

Scratch files for main and extension tasks are included and a help sheet explains how to use the new commands. The extension tasks also includes adding a timer to the quiz.

A wide range of programming and computational thinking concepts and approaches is included, and the activity is well suited to formal or informal assessment
