Teaching guidance and support materials

These resources were published as the Numeracy and then the Primary National Strategy evolved and indicated needs in further guidance on teaching calculations and more materials for teaching specific ability groups of students.

The collection contains:

Numbers and patterns: laying foundations in mathematics focuses on number, particularly counting, and the students’ developing understanding of the patterns that underpin early work.

Securing levels identifies key areas of learning that students need to secure in order to attain a particular level, key teaching and learning resources and an assessment checklist.

Mathematical challenges for able pupils in Key Stages One and Two are intended to challenge students and extend their thinking.

Mathematical vocabulary identifies the words and phrases that students need to understand and use if they are to make good progress in mathematics.

Problem solving with EYFS, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two children has lesson ideas that focus on solving problems.

National Numeracy Strategy progression charts display the progression of certain key calculation skills from Reception through to Year Six.

Teaching written calculations outlines the development of written methods and to give guidance to teachers on how best to achieve this.

Wave 3 materials support students with gaps in their mathematical understanding.

Teaching children to calculate mentally lists the number facts that students are expected to recall rapidly and suggests a range of suitable classroom activities.

Models and images posters give examples of key models and images which can enhance the teaching of mental calculation strategies.
