Salters Science: the Textbooks

Salters' Science books differed from the typical textbooks at the time of publication. There were four books for the double-award science course: two for Year 10 and two for Year 11. Each book included chapters related to five or six of the modules in the course.

The books were designed to reflect to aims of the course and to help teachers lift science out of the classroom and bring it to life by relating it closely to everyday experiences and concerns. Every topic was based on familiar ideas. The intention was to show students how science helps to makes sense of world around them.

Each chapter was divided into five key sections.
*Introducing - this page set the scene and explained why the topic was important and what the chapter covered.
*Looking at – several pages page with photographs and diagrams to show an important application or use of the science ideas.
*In brief – a summary of what students needed to know and understand about the topic.
*Thinking about – a section that explained the key scientific ideas developed in the unit.
*Things to do – a collection of things for students to do including: activities, things to find out, things to write about, points to discuss and questions to answer.
